3. Figures relate to internaly acquired loans secured on residential property in the UK, including staff mortgages, and are normally gross of any provisions. Building society figures mostly exclude other lending on land. Treatment of lending to HA's may be inconsistent in some cases. Mortgage balances outstanding include on balance sheet and securitised assets that are managed (shown on a gross basis). Gross lending figures, where possible, are shown net of portfolio purchased
